There‘s no need to buy fancy traps to get rid of pests. As the following examples will show, simple tools are all that’s needed to make a trap.
Creating Traps for Wasps and Moths
Required Tools and Materials
Half a cup of water
Apple cider vinegar
Scissors
String
2 L soda bottle
½ cup sugar
Banana peel
Vacuum cleaner
Step 1
Pour the water into the bottle. Add the sugar. Shake it until the sugar dissipates. Add in the apple cider vinegar. Shake it. Add the banana peel. Pour in more water until the glass is nearly half full.
Step 2
Use the scissors to make a ¾” diameter hole in the curved section near the bottle’s top. Put the bottle lid on. After you make a trap for wasps, tie the bottle on the tree where the wasps go to.
Notes
If you think there’s a nest below the porch, vacuum it. One way to get rid of yellow jackets is to leave a bottle of Smirnoff Red Label in the place they frequent. The bottle should be filled only up to the neck. The yellow jackets will go straight into the bottle and die there.
Creating a Crab Trap
Required Tools and Materials
Welded wire fencing (1 x 1”)
Rope
Snap rings
Step 1
Get the 1 x 1 wire and use it to create the trap. Slice a part 1’ x 16”. Slice a second piece measuring 1’ x 2’. Get the first piece and bend it to the shape of a bracket. The ends should be 2” away from the body’s piece. To make a trap for crabs, bend the second piece so it looks like a semicircle. The end should go up 6”.
Step 2
Combine the two pieces with the snap rings. Slice two more wire pieces; you’ll be using them as doors. Connect the doors to the pieces using the snap rings. Fasten the rope onto one of the doors. Course the rope through the trap’s top all the way to the other door.
Set the rope down to the door’s bottom. Now draw the rope through the mesh. Get it back on top. The rope should get up to the water surface when utilized. Done correctly, you should be able to shut the door after catching the crab.
Step 3
After you make a trap for crabs, it’s time to use it. Put the trap in the area where the crabs go to. When the crabs go in the doorway they won’t be able to get back out. You can use eel as bait. Turkey necks will also lure them in.
Creating a Sparrow Trap
Required Tools and Materials
Cardboard box
12” string
Bread
Bird seed
Tape
Several big sticks
18” stick
Instructions
Tape the sticks on the cardboard sides. Secure the string to the 18” stick. Fasten the string on the bread. Go to the desired location. Keep the box open using the stick. Spray some bird seed in the box. When the sparrow comes, the box will trap it.
As you can see, it is quite easy to make a trap. These homemade solutions work as well as those sold in stores and don’t cost as much.
