How to Build a Kitchen Island

How to Build a Kitchen Island

Before you start to build a kitchen island, consider the space between the counter and the island. The general consensus is it should be 40 inches, but you can change this.

Required Tools and Materials

Electric drill or screwdriver router
Wood glue
Screws
2 1/2 inch finish nails
Table saw
Framing square
Counter top
Wood
½ inch hinges

Preparatory Steps

Decide how big the island is going to be. Majority of DIY kitchen islands are 24 inches long, but you can make it as long as needed. The average depth is 24 to 48 niches. The average height is 34 ½ inches.

In terms of material, you have several to choose from. Some of the most widely used are hickory, cherry, ash, birch and maple.
Many counter top styles are available. For preparing food, choose maple with wax finish. You can also choose different kinds of Formica plastic. Make sure you select the one that meets your requirements.

Step 1

Saw the side panels to the depth you need. Set the face plates for the cabinet’s front. You need to replicate the cabinet front if you are going to make drawers and doors on the back. The face plate width is typically 1 ½ inches.

The middle plates for dividing doors have a width of 3 to 3 ½ inches. Use the framing square when you assemble the face plates. This will ensure the frames are square.

Step 2

Cut the island cabinet floor to the required size. The next step is to cut a shelf (half shelf or full shelf depth).

Step 3

You have to decide on the door style when you build a kitchen island. In this instance, ¾ inch plywood is used. Cut the doors an inch wider compared to the gap. You will have 1 1/2 inches on every side.

Step 4

Get the router and route the door’s side. Use the profile you like.

Step 5

Set the hinges on the door using the electric drill. Position the hinges onto the face plates.

Step 6

Slice the drawer boxes so they can be set in the openings.

Note: make sure to utilize wood glue to connect the parts to the joints. Fasten all the parts with the nails.

Tip: have the island measurements ready when you place an order for the top. This will ensure the fit is proper.
