Boat Dock Supports

Boat Dock Supports

If you have a yacht or even a small boat, it is important that you know how to build boat dock supports. Apart from launching the vehicle, it will also be useful for lounging. For this project, to make it much easier, you will want an assistant to help you out.

Required Tools and Materials

Eyebolts
Drills
Screws
Pen and papers for sketching designs
Saw
Logs
Wood boards (4 x 4s and 2 x 6s; sizes will vary depending on deck dimensions)

Step 1

Before you start, check with the local government authorities. In some areas it may be necessary to obtain a permit. If necessary, consult the local environment agency and the homeowners.

Step 2

Choose whether the dock will float or be fixed on the bottom of the lake. An anchored dock will require framing. A floating dock will be held by the flotation billets. An anchored dock will take more time to build. If the water is shallow, you will have to make a larger dock. If you don’t know the water depth, have an expert determine it for you.

Step 3

Submerge the pilings for the frame support. Just drive the wood posts down the water until they reach the bottom. Make sure there is a space of four feet among the poles. You must also position the poles 10 feet apart. There are also some units that utilize brackets.

Step 4

To make the frame, connect the 2 x 8 boards on the poles. These should be set a couple of feet down the pole. Connect these supports by applying a couple of carriage bolts onto the ends. This will join the beams to the pole.

Step 5

The next step to build boat dock supports is to set the deck in place. Set the 2 x 8s perpendicular on the frame supports. These stringers should be spaced 16 inches apart.

If you had the pole framing sunk, put the deck slats onto the frame. Place vinyl, aluminum or wood over the stringers. Ensure there is some space for drainage.

Step 6

Fasten the deck using the screws or nails.

Step 7

The final step is to put in the accessories. Make sure there is enough space for the sunning and sitting sections. The pole frame tops are often utilized to tie the boats. However you can also install cleats on the boat or pole.

Tips

You can add the benches in-between the poles. You can also install a ladder so swimmers can get on it. There are many wood types, but the best option is cedar or hardened wood. Other kinds of wood will deteriorate when put in water.

Aside from wood based supports, there are other docking systems you can avail of. Some modular systems have galvanized framing. They are easier to assemble. There are also one person docks available. These are foldable and can be stored during the cold season.

It takes effort to build boat dock supports especially if you use wood. However it can be done provided you have some patience. As stated, there are other systems on hand for others who prefer a simpler process.
