One of the best ways to give the kitchen (or any area) a makeover is to learn how to tile a floor. First you need to get the following materials. These can be purchased in hardware and home improvement stores.
Required Tools and Materials
Mortar
Grout
Tape measure
Tiles
Chisel or putty knife
Hammer
Remove all the old tiles. You can use a putty knife or a chisel. The chisel is more suited for hard to remove tiles. Sweep the floor after the tiles have been cleaned.
Step 2
Mix the mortar if you haven’t already. Go to the center area. Put on a thin layer of mortar. Spread the mortar evenly.
Step 3
Put the tile in place. It does not matter where you start; just make sure the tiles are aligned properly. After you have put all the tiles in, you can add some grout.
Step 4
Let the floor dry for 24 hours.
Note: it is not always necessary to put grout in. If you do not know how to put these in, you should follow the instructions in the package.
How to Determine the Amount of Tiles Needed
Part of learning how to tile a floor involves knowing the precise amount needed. Use the following method to figure the amount.
Step 1
Use a measuring tape and measure the width and length of the floor. Make sure to measure past any furniture that is wall mounted. Measure from wall to wall. If the result ends in inches (i.e., 8 ft 8 in) round this to the next closest foot. If the kitchen floor has an odd shape, conduct the measurements in section.
Step 2
To find the sq ft area, multiply the width and length measurements. If you measured in multiple sections, total the square footage for all the areas.
Step 3
To determine the tiles required per sq ft of floor, divide 144 with the area of a single tile.
Step 4
If you are still not sure of the measurements, just get the square footage of the area. Go to a hardware store. The personnel there should be able to get the right tile sizes. Note that some tiles may have to be cut down.
If you are going to learn how to tile a floor, it is a good idea to always double check the measurements. If the measurements are not correct, the tiling will not work, no matter how you try to set them in place.
