Start by preparing the surface. Take off any stain or paint on the furniture.

Sand the furniture until it becomes smooth.

Get the damp cloth. Use it to remove dust, sawdust and other dirt. When the dirt is gone, put the stain on. Apply generous amounts of stain. You can use a rag or the foam brush to apply the stain.

It is important to let the stain get through the wood surface. Wipe the excess stain prior to it drying up.

Put on extra stain coats if needed. The more coating you put on, the darker and richer it will be. Each coating should be given three hours to dry. After three hours, you can add another layer.

Step 1
For painted furniture, chip it off. Just apply paint thinner and sand it off. Keep sanding until the furniture becomes smooth.
Step 2
Get the clean rag. Use it to get rid of wood particles and any leftover dust.
Step 3
Use the other clean rag to apply the whitewash. Every inch of the surface must have whitewash on. Use as much whitewash as needed. Wipe off the extra whitewash.
Step 4
Apply as many coats as needed to get the look you like. Usually two coats will be enough. Again, allow each coating three hours of drying time.
Step 5
After the last coating has been applied, let it dry for 24 hours.
Tips and Warnings
Always wipe the stain in the grain’s direction. The more pressure you put, the lighter it will be. If you want dark hues, use less pressure when wiping.
Do not touch the furniture until it has dried; it will stain your hands and clothes. To be safe, wear old clothes when you whitewash. If you are worried about staining the floor, put old towels or newspapers under the furniture.
You can whitewash furniture by yourself. But an assistant can also help. One can apply the stain while the other gets rid of the extra stain. The work will be faster and the results more consistent.
