How to Build a Retaining Wall

How to Build a Retaining Wall

A retaining wall has many practical uses. By having one in your garden, it adds a new dimension to your patios and garden landscape. To build a retaining wall, prepare the following materials.

Required Tools and Materials

Circular saw
Hand chisel
Clean rock
Spray paint
Level
Measuring tape
Landscape fabric (filter cloth)
Concrete blocks
Crushed rock
Shovel

Step 1

Get measuring tape. Use it to determine the wall’s dimensions. Get the linear feet of the wall so you know how many blocks are required.

Step 2

Put spray paint around the area where the wall will be made. Make sure the spray paint is clear and well defined.

Step 3

Dig a trench using the shovel. It has to be large enough for the block and for a few rocks on its sides. Make it deep enough to cover the first row of blocks. With average size blocks, this means digging a foot below the ground.

Step 4

To build a retaining wall effectively, put an inch of compacted rock on the trench. Ensure the trench is uniform. If necessary, shift the rocks so they are level.

Step 5

Put the blocks side by side. Set these along the trench. Be certain they are level.

Step 6

If the rock comes with several layers, place the blocks in an alternating pattern. You have the option of stacking the blocks or recessing them. The choice is up to you.

Step 7

Put the landscaping fabric between dirt and concrete blocks. In case of rainfall, the dirt is going to be filtered. It will keep the blocks from mud exposure.

Step 8

Get some clean compact rocks. Place them between the landscape fabric and the concrete blocks. Get as many rocks as needed to fill up the empty space.

Step 9

If there are odd and irregular shapes, use the circular saw to shape some blocks. Use them as filler.

Tips and Warnings

For beginners, you should stick with three feet or lower walls. Once you have the experience, you can opt to build higher walls. As a rule, recessed blocks are better suited for high walls.

Do not set your wall too close to trees. Their roots could interfere with the walls and cause them to collapse. Always have plenty of crushed rocks with you.Haivng an extra pile is a good idea.

If you are going to build a retaining wall in the garden, take the overall look of the place into consideration. It should complement the scenery and not be a distraction.
