How to Build a Chair

How to Build a Chair

You can build a chair using wood, metal and other materials. This guide will show you how to make one using PVC pipes.

Required Tools and Materials

Rubber mallet
Canvas
PVC cement
PVC pipes
21 ½ inch long PVC pipes
4 PVC elbow connectors
2 PVC pipe sections, 7 inches long, 1 ¼ inches in diameter
4 PVC pipe sections, 6 inches long and 1 ¼ inches in diameter
A section of PVC pipe, 18 inches long and 1 ¼ inches in diameter

Step 1

The first step is to make the base. Stitch the canvas so you have a 1 ½ inch open hem on the bottom and top of the piece. This is going to be used to thread the pipe for making the seat and back of the chair.

Step 2

Slip a 21 ½ in pipe in the hole at the canvas piece’s top. Repeat the process with another fabric piece.

Step 3

Get an elbow connector and put a 21 ¼ inch pipe in it. To learn how to build a chair successfully, you will need to repeat this step. You will now have a couple of U shaped pipe working sections.

Step 4

Get a 12 inch pipe and put a T connector in its end.

Step 5

Get an 18 inch pipe and string it through the canvas bottom connected to the unit. Do this again on the other part. This makes up the back and seat.

Step 6

Join a 21 ½ inch pipe on the ends to create the arm rest.

Step 7

Put a 7 inch pipe section in the T connector at the back of the chair. You can use the elbow connectors on the end of the seven inch pipe section.

Step 8

Put the 18 inch pipe sections in the elbow connectors. This constitutes the top part of the chair.

Step 9

Check if the chair is level. If necessary, make some adjustments.

Tips and Warnings

Make sure you make this chair on an even surface. This will ensure the chair is stable. If you want to paint the chair, paint before assembling the pieces. You must also use a PVC cleaner before applying any paint. You can use the rubber mallet to fit the PVC pieces if needed.

Before you build a chair, a word here needs to be about using cement. It can make the chair sturdier, but you will not be able to disassemble it. Apply cement only if needed.
