How to Build a Fort

A fort can be built using different methods, depending on what its purpose will be. Learning how to build a fort can be difficult, but the following will show how you to make a wood port for the kids.

Required Tools and Materials

Shovel
Screws
Power drill
Hammer
Tape measure
3/4 inch plywood
2-by-6 pieces of lumber
2 x 4 wood pieces
Electric powered saw

Step 1

Choose an appropriate fort location. It should be easily accessible for the kids. Mark the area where the fort will be built. Dig up the ground, grass and sod. Leave layer of dirt for the base. Ensure the ground is level.

Step 2

Put the corner posts at the ground. Make a corner using a couple of 2 x 4s. Put the two posts in the ground but leave about eight inches protruding. Repeat these steps for the other posts in the corners.

Step 3

Set the bottom beam supports down. Put down 2 x 6 lumbers between the corners. This will be the support. When you study how to build a fort, knowing how to make supports is crucial.

Step 4

Set the floor down with the plywood sheet. Join the plywood to the joists by utilizing the wood screws. Repeat this every one foot (12 inches).

Step 5

The next step is to create the walls. Put down the 2 x 4 pieces of lumber on the fort floor. Set them down side by side. Join a 2 x 4 lumber piece lengthwise on to the bottom and top of the wood pieces. Get another 2 x 4 lumber piece.

Place it four inches off the bottom. Fasten this to the flooring using the screws. Keep repeating this until you have all the walls made.

Step 6

Put the walls up and into position. Put the wall on the bottom of the joined 2 x 4 (the one four inches off the bottom). Hold it in place with some screws. Repeat the process until you have all the walls completed.

Step 7

The final steps involve adding the door and windows. Use the electric saw to cut out the door and window. Use hinges to put the door into place.

Tips and Warnings

Put an extra joist in the floor center if the fort flooring is larger than 4 x 4 ‘.

This guide on how to build a fort will produce a sturdy fort. But if you want something that is stronger, put more screws on the flooring from the 2 x 4 lumber’s top.
