With a bit of patience, you can build a dog kennel on your own. While this can take some time to finish, it is cheaper than paying someone to do it for you.

Step 1
Start by cleaning up the area you will use as a kennel. Remove any debris or material that may injure the dog.
Measure the area that will be used. This is necessary so you can get the right fence material. Make sure that it is large enough for the animal to move freely.
Step 3
After you get the dimensions right, you can put the fence in place. Dig up holes for the posts. Install the posts. Put dirt around the hole. Pack the post areas with dirt before you continue to build a dog kennel.
Step 4
Install the fence around the area. Make sure the fence is at least twice the height of the animal. Some areas will also demand that you put a “Beware dog” sign. Check with the local authorities if this is required.
Step 5
Put the shelter inside the area. You can buy these shelters at very affordable prices in pet stores. The cost will also be determined by the size of the animal.
Step 6
You can put some blankets or cedar shavings at the shelter. This will keep the animal from freezing.
Step 7
Add the food, water bowl and some toys to keep the animal occupied. Make sure the dog gets food to eat twice daily minimum. Check the water periodically. Add more if needed. Replace the water if it is
dirty.
Step 8
If it really gets cold during the winter, consider putting a 60 watt bulb in the area. This will keep the dog warm. Be certain that the extension cord is waterproof. You can also use put some wire mesh on the light bulb.
Tips and Warnings
When measuring the kennel, bear in mind how far it is from your house and the neighboring area. You must also buy high quality material. Make certain the kennel can withstand snow, rain and wind. Heavy duty fencing is necessary.
It should have non-toxic plastic coating. When installing the fencing, ensure it sinks in the ground. This will make the fence more stable.
After you build a dog kennel, check it periodically for any breakages or sharp protrusions. Be certain the dog cannot open the door using its paws.
