Carpets make any room look cleaner but if there are stains or balding patches on them, they can prove to be an eyesore. When this occurs, you don’t have to immediately set out to get new carpets; you can try and work on the damaged areas first.
There are very simple steps on how to repair carpet that you can undertake and these take just few minutes to complete.
How to Repair Carpet: Do-It-Yourself Guide
1. First, check the affected area to see how far the damage is. If you have just a bit of stain on the surface, meaning it didn’t touch the bottom of the carpet; you may try to take out the stain by trimming it off the carpet.
Make sure that you do not go very deeply into the carpet as this may result in a bald patch.
2. If the stain has gone down deeply into the bottom surface of the carpet or you have a bald patch, you may have to replace the damaged area with a piece of carpet that is of the same color and make.
3. Take a small can and press this down on your replacement piece, nap side up. Cut-off the piece based on the impression it made through the pressed can.
4. Using the same can, place it on the damaged area to make a similar-sized impression. Cut-off the marked area. Before proceeding to the next step, check if you have the right size of replacement piece by placing this on the damaged spot.
5. Take a double-sided carpet tape and then insert this on the patch where you have just taken out the damaged piece. Make sure that the tape is at least two inches longer and wider than the spot to ensure that the tape will stay in place.
Note: Double-sided carpet tape can be purchased from any hardware or carpet supplier.
6. Once the tape has been inserted, place your replacement piece inside the damaged spot, pressing firmly to ensure that the piece is completely attached to the tape.
7. Trim off excess fibers with a pairs of scissors to get an even surface.
8. Place a flat and heavy object over the repaired spot and leave this for at least twenty-hours to make sure that the replacement piece is truly attached to the tape.
These very basic steps will have your carpet looking great once again. After you have completed all the steps above, you may not even notice where the damaged spot has once been.
