Kitchen cabinets suffer from a lot of neglect, opening and closing them several times a day with nary a thought as to the constant abuse we are rendering these cabinets.
Before you decide to replace your kitchen cabinets, you should first try to re-paint your cabinets to give them a brand new look. Painting kitchen cabinets requires very easy steps that you can do yourself, and you can finish this project in just a few hours.
Painting Kitchen Cabinets
To give your kitchen cabinets a fresh look, just follow these easy steps:
Preparing your cabinets:
1. Cleaning. First, clean out your cabinets. Take out all the items that you are keeping inside each closet and then wipe the surfaces to get rid of oil or liquid residues.
It is recommended that you likewise take out the cabinet doors so you can work more properly without having to worry about the doors swinging as you clean and do the rest of your painting process.
2. Sanding. Before sanding your cabinets, make sure that they are dry and have no other residues in place. Sand all surfaces that you will be painting to give them a smooth and even consistency.
Make sure not to sand too vigorously as you may scratch the surfaces leaving them uneven.
Painting process:
1. Dusting. Dust off the grit from your sanding process so you won’t have any residues sticking to the primer and the paint. Grit can make your paint job look rough, giving your cabinets a kind of “dirty” finish.
2. Primer. Before applying the paint color of your choice, you should firs coat your cabinets with a primer. The primer will allow the paint to stick to the surface as well as ensure that your paint will not easily peel off.
Make sure that the primer you get is compatible with the type of paint that you will be getting.
3. Painting. After the primer has completely dried, it is now time to apply your fresh coat of paint. Using a paint spray is recommended as this will help you to paint more evenly.
However, if you are using a paint brush, make sure that you do not apply coatings too generously as this will not only take longer to dry but may also result in an uneven finish.
Once your first coating has completely dried, you may apply a second coating to get the right hue that you want from your cabinets. Before long, you will have brand new looking kitchen cabinets that can definitely improve the look of your kitchen.
