How to Build a Garage

If you are planning on building a garage, bear in mind that it will take some time before you can finish it. Before you start on the actual building, make a detailed sketch of the plan.

Required Tools and Materials

Lumber
Roofing materials
Concrete
Walls (pre-cut or handmade)
Windows
Doors
Nails, screws, bolts
Saw
Hammer
Drill

Step 1

Determine the size of your garage. Is it going to store a single vehicle or more? Will you use it to store tools and use as a workshop? Will it double up as an office too? Take these into consideration when you set the measurements down. Procure the lumber based on the measurements you took.

Step 2

Set the foundation down. Pour the concrete in the ground or a wooden frame. Make certain the slab is squared. The sill plates have to be leveled.

Step 3

Now you have to lay the walls down. Set the studs distance according to the residential zoning laws in your area. The support studs are typically 16 to 24 inches apart. Cut the walls according to the measurements that you set down.

If the measurements are correct, start cutting the walls. Have someone help you get the walls up and placed in the proper position. Once the walls are in place, you can start nailing them together.

Step 4

The next step to building a garage is to add the roofing materials. Choose between making the roof parts yourself or prefabricated trusses. The prefabricated trusses are easier to put in place.

Step 5

Next you have to put the sheathing in place. Sheathing materials to choose from include particle boards, wafer-boards or plywood.

Step 6

Cut holes in the walls so the windows will fit. You can buy windows in hardware and home improvement stores. Follow the instructions on how to install it. Before you order, make sure the window dimensions are correct.

Step 7

Put soffit and siding on. Only use rust resistant nails. Make sure that the rafter ends are straight.

Step 8

Now is the time to put in the finishing touches. Apply the asphalt shingles and the roofing felt. Be certain the sheathing is dry and clean before you put the felt on.

If you are building a garage big enough for several vehicles, make sure that it won’t rain for the next few days. Even with some friends around, it will take a few days to build it. Do not hurry this project so you avoid making errors.
