How to Make a Model Volcano

How to Make a Model Volcano

One of the most notable science projects that students encounter during their school days is creating a model volcano. This kind of activity is highly educational and very interesting, especially for kids whose minds are filled with unanswered questions regarding science. However, this task can be quite difficult for those who barely know how to do such moderately easy task. To make things much easier, here is a quick look at how to make a model volcano.

Materials Needed

Just like any other project, it is easier to do things if you have the right materials available. Bring in food coloring. Some of the excellent color choices for this specific project include yellow, red and green. You will also need household vinegar, a measuring cup as well as sodium bicarbonate, which is more commonly known as baking soda. In addition, be sure to prepare a tablespoon, a funnel and 16-ounces of clear bottle water. You also need a tray or any large dish. Likewise, it is also important to bring at least 3-packs of brown clay or any other color that resembles that of a volcano.

Procedures

Start by putting the clear bottle in the dish or tray. Be sure that it is empty and dry. Cover it with clay. Mold the clay until it forms a conical shape just like that of a volcano. The bottle must be positioned upright so that the opening will appear on top of the volcano. Leave it open and free from any kind of obstruction because it will serve as the crater later on.

Once the volcano is shaped properly, get the plastic funnel. Use it to put 3 to 4 tablespoons of baking soda right inside the bottle. After that, get the measuring cup and then use it to prepare ½-cup vinegar. Add the food coloring to the vinegar and then stir to distribute the color.

Slowly pour the vinegar mixture into the crater. After pouring, keep a significant distance from the project to prevent any kind of accident. Within a few seconds, bubbles and overflow will flow out of the bottle opening, just like lava flowing out of the volcano’s crater.

Additional Tips and Other Helpful Information

To achieve the best results, you can practice first with small amounts of the said ingredients. In case a plastic funnel is not available, it is very easy to make a replacement. Just get a piece of thick paper and then form it into a funnel. For safety purposes, it is highly recommended to wear safety goggles and gloves when performing this kind of project. Be sure to wash your hands properly once the project is over.
