How to Build a Deer Feeder

A deer feeder is a clever way of drawing out deer for game, and at the same time keeping them well-fed and in good health. It’s not at all hard to learn how to build a deer feeder, and the real gauge of its effectiveness is in placing it in the right location.

Before building a deer feeder, one should first choose a suitable site to put it on and make the appropriate preparations. The deer feeder should be situated on level ground. Clear off any trace of dirt in the area, and place a 5 gallon bucket on it. Then, use a permanent marker to indicate a point around 8” away from the bottom of the bucket, the distance of which will serve as the tube’s height. This would be the best measurement for building the feeder, as it provides the deer with lots of room, as well as keeping the other animals at bay.

Using a power saw, cut the bucket down to a height of 8”, then drill 6 equally-spaced holes under it to serve as its drainage system. Make certain that the bucket used is sturdy enough to endure the sawing and the drilling. Next, take a PVC pipe with a diameter of 3” and saw 2 holes at both ends of the bottom of the pipe. The diameter needs to be 3” and no wider than 1” to enable the proper distribution of food by the deer feeder being built. The PVC pipe is set with its slit facing downward, using a marker to indicate the area wherein the pipe will rest in the base’s interior. Incisions are then made on the base using a knife. A zip tie is placed into the holes, pulling up the tie so that the pipe is securely in position.

In order to draw out as many deer as possible, pick out a tree in a nice, quiet spot. The chosen tree does not have to be isolated; just make sure it is located amid quiet surroundings. A place which has too many people or animals about tends not to be enticing to deer. Do not try anything that would scare them off. Upon finding the appropriate area, the zip ties are held by the tube; tying and pulling them as tightly as necessary, and then cutting off extra strings with a knife before the strings are chewed off by the animals.

To add food into the deer feeder, simply pour in grains or corn, letting some of it fall in the bucket. Make certain that the feed used isn’t spoiled. One can also purchase commercially-manufactured deer feeds available in the market. To be sure, research on what types of feeds are fit for deer consumption.
