A barn is a structure that can be used to house livestock, animals and other agricultural materials. These are instructions on how to build a barn for goats.
Required Tools and Materials
Saw
Screws
Nails
Hammer
Drill
Three hinges for door
Paint
Roofing tin
Plywood sheets (for the roof and walls)
Spring hooks
Eye hooks
Water bucket
2-by-10 lumber (16 will be required for three goats)
Note: these barn dimensions are for 3 goats. Get more wood if you need a bigger barn.
Choose a pasture site. It should be level. The area must also be fenced. If it isn’t, install one now. Goats enjoy climbing, so put the barn near rocks.
Step 2
Remove debris, grass or weeds from the site. Cut the grass as low as you can.
Step 3
Make a rectangle frame by nailing or fastening 2 x 10 boards. Goats
and other livestock are better off on dirt. At any rate, they will be bedded on straw.
Step 4
After the base is done, make the frames with the 2 x 10 boards. The next step to learning how to build a barn is to slant the roof and frame the sides. Set aside an opening 6 feet high and 3 feet wide. This will be for the door. Make sure you leave the flooring open for the grass.
Step 5
Nail the plywood sheets on the framing to make the roof and walls. Nail the roofing tin or metal on the roof. Fasten it tight to the roof. Be certain the roof has a slant so snow and rain will not accumulate on it.
Step 6
Fasten the hinges on using the screws. Cut the plywood to make the door and install it. To close the goats in, use the spring latch and eye hook.
Step 7
After the door has been put on, you can have the barn painted. Let the paint dry. Put the spring hook in the barn. Use this to hang the water bucket. Add the bedding. The barn is now finished.
Tips and Warnings
Use only thin or metal roofs as goats will not be able to chew through therm. If you want to make fancier barns, there are pre-built kits available. Make sure the area is not subject to sudden temperature changes. Goats are susceptible to the sudden temperature swings.
If you are still thinking of how to build a barn, you can turn to your local cooperative extension. They will have barn plans that you can use as templates.
