How to Fix 3 Red Lights on Xbox 360

If you see the RROD (Red Ring of Death) on your Xbox, it means the system will freeze. The technique outlined below will show how to fix 3 red lights on Xbox 360.

Required Tools and Materials

Scissors
Screwdrivers
Rubbing alcohol
Credit card
Wrench
Drill
Thermal compound
Q tips
Transparent tape

Step 1

Shut the console down. Disconnect the power cords.

Step 2

Open the Xbox casing with the screwdriver. Remove the heatsinks’ bolts. Carefully pry off the X clamps. As you remove the components, set them aside carefully.

Step 3

Scrape off the existing thermal compound with the credit card. You can also use a phone card. To remove dirt and grime, clean it with a Q tip dipped in alcohol. Clean the area as much as you can.

Step 4

Put some thermal compound on the die. Put in as much thermal compound as you wiped off. Rip off a piece of credit card and stick it on the die. This will go a long way to keeping the heat level manageable.

Step 5

Get the heatsink and screw it back into position. Apply the washers as necessary. When you fix 3 red lights on Xbox 360, ensure the screws are tight.

Step 6

Get the motherboard and put it back in its proper location. Make sure that you hook up all the components in their proper locations. In some cases, the motherboard may not fit in properly. Should that be the case, make some holes in the casing. Don’t drill holes larger than the screw heads.

Step 7

Reassemble the 360. Put in all the other components, including the hard drive, heat sink and other parts. Put the components in their proper location. Connect the console to a power source. Turn the Xbox on. The RROD error will no longer be there.

Tips and Warnings

If problems persist, check the cables. The color should be green. If it is red, there is a problem with it. Replace the cables if they are worn out or damaged. The most conspicuous sign is the four (not three) rings.

If your Xbox has two rings, the problem is likely due to overheating. Try moving the console to a room with better ventilation. Use a brush to remove any dirt.

Before you try to fix 3 red lights on Xbox 360, check the warranty first. If it is still covered, you may be entitled to a replacement or repair from Microsoft. Bring the Xbox to the shop along with the receipt.
