Make a Basic Box Bed Frame
Step 1
Get the dimensions of your mattress. Make the outside dimensions of the box a bit smaller than the mattress. This is necessary so you don’t bump your legs on the edge when you get up. Cut two end edges and two side edges.
Step 2
Slice the end pieces so it can be put in the edge parts. Put these pieces together on the wood glue. Clamp the pieces together.
Step 3
Allow the glue to dry. Put in three screws on the box corners. If making full size or bigger frames, put one or more support beams. Fasten the beams using the screws.
Step 4
Saw veneered plywood sheet to the right size. Join this to the frame top. The result will be a very robust bed frame.
Make a Four Post Bed
If you want to build a bed frame with four posts, you will have to do the following.
Step 1
Measure the size of your mattress. Saw the edge pieces to the right dimensions. Make sure that you account for the square post dimensions.
Step 2
Put together the pieces to make the frame. The width and length of the interior must be bigger than the mattress.
Step 3
Slice the bed posts to the desired height.
Step 4
Connect the bedrail hangers on the posts. Place a hanger on all the sides. This will be connected to the rail. Two should be connected on every post. Join the bedrail hanger matching side on the edge piece.
Step 5
Make grooves in 3 blocks. It should be as wide as the slat you will use. Join the support blocks on the frame edges. Ensure the blocks are distributed evenly.
Step 6
Set the frame edges on the posts by attaching the hangers. On the blocks, lay the support beams. Put the plywood on it. The mattress ought to fit the frame perfectly.
After you build a bed frame, you have the option of painting it. However, it is much better if you paint the pieces before joining them. No matter when you decide to paint it, make sure to let the paint dry before using it.
