Someone who has never tried to build a birdhouse may think the project is next to impossible. However, this birdhouse is simple enough a single person can do it.
Required Tools and Materials
Exterior grade wood glue
4 penny nails (galvanized)
One 6 foot cedar picket
Stencils and other materials to beautify the birdhouse
Sander
Draw a sketch of the birdhouse. The specs will depend on the size of the bird. If you are going to put two birds there, a large birdhouse will be needed. The size of the structure will determine how many wood pieces will be needed.
Sand the piece of wood prior to cutting it. It is better to sand it now so the wood is easier to hold. Use rough and medium sanding. Now cut the wood pieces according to the dimensions of your birdhouse. Always measure twice before cutting.
Step 2
Measure the wood pieces for the birdhouse. The dimensions will depend on how big the birdhouse is. The size is up to you. The only difference between the birdcage front and back is the opening at the front.
If you don’t want to make an opening when you build a birdhouse, you don’t have to. You can just put on some decorations there instead.
Step 3
Get the nails and apply glue on the joints. Put some glue at the edges. Nail the pieces together. Take off any extra glue you see. Use your sketch as a guide for putting the pieces together.
Step 4
Once the birdhouse has been constructed, you should sand the entire structure. Keep sanding until it is smooth. Make sure to sand the edges and the corners until they become smooth.
Step 5
Decorate the birdhouse. You can use stencils, paint or both. The colors are up to you. You can apply as many coatings as you want. But you need to give it time to dry.
Tips and Warnings
Make sure the piece is straight and doesn’t have any knots. It is very important that you sand the wood first. No matter what the size of the birdhouse is, make sure you work in a well ventilated place. Ventilation is important when you paint. Never paint without a mask. Wear old clothes in case your shirt gets stained.
The most important thing to remember when you build a birdhouse is the sketch. By making it as detailed as possible, you won’t get confused during the construction.
