This is a guide on how to build a doghouse for large dogs. But you can still use the steps outlined below to make smaller doghouses. You just need to use the dimensions best fitting for your pet.
Required Tools and Materials
Medium disposable foam brush
Waterproof stain finish
Latches (2)
Hinges
Screwdriver
2 x 4 x 48" lengths of cedar for the frame
Roof shingles
Wood glue
¾" finished plywood, 48 x 48 x 48 x 48"
Wood screws
Circular saw
Tape measure
Note: this doghouse is for outdoor use.
Measure your dog from the tail to the nose.
Step 2
Measure the height of the dog too. Add several inches for the doghouse dimensions. For the length, add about 18 inches. In this example, the size basis is 48 inches.
If the dog is 30 inches long, put 18 inches more to make a square doghouse. Make the sides and the floor 48 inches square. Cut 3/4 inch plywood into half a dozen pieces to size.
Step 3
To build a doghouse frame, fasten the 2 x 4 x 48 inch cedar studs. Add a bit of wood glue in the screw hole. Repeat the step for the frame at the top.
Step 4
Fasten the frame on the doghouse flooring section. Butt the sides. Fasten 3 wall portions to the roof frame and the floor.
Step 5
Use a saw to cut the door. It should be a few inches taller than your pet. For large dogs, you can add four inches on the left a third of the fourth wall. Fasten them into place using the screws.
Step 6
Seal the frame corner seams with wood caulking.
Step 7
Get three hinges. Use these to join the roof part onto the frame. Installing this will make it easy to clean the roof. You can also fold the roof. Attach a couple of latch fixtures on the roof’s front side. This will fasten it against rain and strong winds.
Step 8
Apply weatherproof stain on the doghouse. For the best results, apply three coatings. Let the stain dry. Once this is dry, the doghouse will be ready to use.
Tips and Warnings
You can paint the doghouse too. As with staining, you must make sure it has dried sufficiently before letting the animal use it.
Wear eye goggles when you build a doghouse. Splinters and debris may fly off when you cut the wood boards. You should paint the doghouse outside or in a well ventilated area.
