While it is very easy to buy tables, you can make one or several with very little trouble. Learning how to build a table can be exciting and rewarding. You should be able to finish this over a weekend.
Required Tools and Materials
Stain/varnish or paint
Sand paper
Blanket
Drill
1/2-inch screws
L-shaped brackets
3/4-inch thick, 6-foot piece of wood for the table top
2 x 2 wood boards
Saw
Tape measure
Get the 2 x 2s and cut them to make the table legs. Each has to be 35 inches long.
Step 2
To make the table top, cut the ¾ inch thick wood pieces. The table top should measure 3 feet wide by 4 feet long.
Step 3
Connect an L shaped bracket over each leg. Use the screws to attach the bracket. Make sure the bracket top is flushed on the leg’s top. Repeat the process so that every leg has an L shaped bracket attached on their adjoining sides.
Step 4
Set a blanket on the floor. Put the table top on this blanket. The top side should make contact with the blanket. This step is important for anyone learning how to build a table. It will keep the table from getting scratched as you put the pieces together.
Step 5
Mark 1 ¼ inches from the four table corners. These are the spots where the table will be set. There should be a bit of overhang.
Step 6
Set the legs on the areas you marked. Ensure the L shaped brackets are set towards the middle of the table top.
Step 7
Fasten the leg with the half inch screws. Fasten the loose portion table top with the L shaped brackets. Repeat the steps for all the table legs. At the end of this step, all the legs should be connected and the brackets in place.
Step 8
Flip the table over. Get the sand paper and smooth the whole table. Keep sanding until the edges have been smoothed out.
Step 9
Paint the table any color you like. Let it dry for 12 to 24 hours. If you decide to stain the table, place a coat of varnish on top of the stain. Allow it 24 hours to dry. Check the manufacturer if it requires more drying time.
If you are studying how to build a table, make sure you work in a clean environment. This is particularly important when you paint the tables. You must never paint in a closed-in room. .
