You can build a chicken coop in numerous ways. The following is one of the simplest methods. You will only need a few 2 x 4s to make a very usable and practical coop for your chickens.
Required Tools and Materials
Hay
Large tarp
5-gallon bucket
Plywood
Chicken wire
Deck screws
2 x 4 lumbers
Step 1
Decide where the chicken coop will be placed. The ground has to be level. Make sure also it will not get flooded when it rains.
Step 2
Cut the plywood panels to the desired dimensions for the floor. Keep in mind that chickens require about 4 sq ft each. Screw the 2 x 4s to make the floor frames.
Step 3
To make the walls, screw 2 x 4s on the perimeter of the coop. Space the 2 x 4s evenly. Note: you do not need to make a roof frame since the structure is comprised mostly of chicken wire.
Step 4
Get the chicken wire. Staple it from the flooring boards all the way to the roof. Dig a 12 inch trench. Put 12 inches of chicken wire into it. This will prevent cats, rats, and other predators from attacking the chickens. This step is applicable only if you build a chicken coop that is permanent.
Step 5
Enfold and staple the chicken wire on the roof. Make sure it overlaps a bit on the outer walls. Put a big tarp on half of the coop. This will give shade when it gets very hot. Fasten the tarp. This will secure the chicken wire.
Step 6
Make a fifteen inch nesting box. You can use a layer of hay and some plywood.
Step 7
Join a 2 x 4 along the coop from wall to wall. It should be a couple of feet from the flooring. This is where the creatures roost.
Step 8
For the feeding, drill five inch openings along a bucket (five gallons). This should be half an inch off the bottom. Put this bucket on a base on the right side. Put some feed in it. Set the feeder up to the neck of the chicken. Make a couple of holes around the bottom of the base for watering.
Before you build a chicken coop, decide if you want a free range feed for the livestock. If you do, don’t add a floor. Just keep the area open. Just make long panel boards that can be joined to the coop. These can be utilized as handholds.
