Clogging is one of the most common problems with toilets. Fortunately, this is quite easy to deal with. Below are the methods you can use to fix a toilet with clogging problems.
Required Tools and Materials
Bucket
Plunger
Closet auger
How to Remove Tissue Clogs
Get a bucket and put in a couple of gallons (8 liters) of water. Put this in the middle of the bowl. If this doesn’t work, go to step 2.
Step 2
Get a plunger. Set it over the opening so there is a seal. Move the plunger in an up and down motion. The movement has to be vigorous. Use only short strokes.
How to Remove Other Clogs
Step 1
If neither of the methods mentioned above work, use a closet auger. This tool will be able to reach in and get rid of the clogs. To use, put the auger into the bottom opening. Keep pushing until you sense a soft resistance.
Step 2
When you feel the resistance, continue pushing. But you should set the handle clockwise. This will secure the end onto the clog. Keep this up as you pull the clog in the bowl.
Step 3
Break up and remove the clog. Flush the toilet.
Warning: do not attempt to use the plunger or bucket if the toilet is close to overflowing.
Plunger or Auger?
The plunger is ideal for clogs brought about by tissues and similar material. If the clog is caused by another object, the plunger may end up clogging the toilet even more. Use the auger instead.
How to Fix a Toilet that Overflows
Step 1
Take the lid off and set the flapper down firmly. Next, the float at the fill valve must be lifted. Hold the float. Keep holding it until the tank water goes down.
Step 2
If necessary, unclip the refill tube. Point the tube in the tank.
Turn the shut off valve clockwise. The valve is to the toilet’s left on the rear. This will keep water from coming in the tank.
Tips and Warnings
If several toilets are overflowing, the trouble is with the vent stack. Check the vent pipe; it is probably clogged up. An auger can be used to remove the clog.
