How to Fix an Xbox

How to Fix an Xbox

The Xbox is a widely used console, but some units have overheating problems. This results in a red light appearing on the console along with an Error 74 message. If you need to fix an Xbox with this problem, use this guide.

Required Tools and Materials

Xbox audio cable
Xbox video cable
Torx screwdriver
Flat edged screwdriver
Long, thin stick
Cloth
Anti-static strap

Step 1

Unplug all the cables on the Xbox.

Step 2

Place one hand in the door concealing the USB ports. At the same time, use your other hand to squeeze the bottom and top of the faceplate. Pry off the faceplate.

Step 3

Flip the console upside down on the cloth. Take out the four clips. These are the ones holding the top sheet on the bottom.

Step 4

Flex the ventilation shield and insert the stick in the holes. Try to remove the clips keeping the tabs on the gray plastic. Press the front button and do the same thing on the other side of the Xbox.

Step 5

To fix an Xbox, you have to take off the bottom shelf. Use the screwdriver to unscrew the 8 black screws and the 14 screws. Position the Xbox so the right side is up. Take off the outer shell.

Step 6

Plug in the video cable and the power cord. Turn the console on. When the Error 74 message appears, turn the console off.

Step 7

Look for a fan alongside the large gold fan. Take out the X clamps. Wait for ten minutes to elapse.

Step 8

After ten minutes, take off the metal shell on the fan. Turn the console on. Wait for a couple of red lights to illuminate. Turn the Xbox off. Unplug it.

Step 9

Put the metal shield above the small fan. Push the shield down until you hear it click. Plug the Xbox in and power it up. The green lights will appear and so will the regular Xbox display.

Step 10

Turn off the Xbox and take out the video cable and power cord from the unit. Assemble the Xbox in the reverse order the objects were removed.

Tips and Warnings

You should wear an anti-static strap before disassembling the Xbox. This will reduce the chances of you damaging the components.

Before you study how to fix an Xbox, remember that opening the box will void the warranty. Repair shops may also refuse to do any repair if the unit has been opened. Have the Xbox repaired or replaced if it’s under warranty still.
