How to Install a Garbage Disposal

A garbage disposal unit on the kitchen sink can be an indispensible tool for cooks. If you are thinking of installing a garbage disposal, you can use the following as a guide.

Required Tools and Materials

Screws
Screwdriver
Plumber’s putty
New flange
Scraping tool

Step 1

Take the waste assembly off the sink. You can do this by unhooking it off the sink flange. Turn the screws. The assembly will loosely hang. Pry the snap ring off to remove the mounting assembly. Lift off the flange. You will end up with a hole in the sink.

Step 2

Remove any sealant by scraping it. Take out any gasket below the sink. Clean the surface.

Step 3

Apply some plumber’s putty in your hands. Shape this into a thin tube. Use the putty to create a seal below the flange. Install the new flange over this hole. Push it down firmly. Remove any excessive putty.

Step 4

The next step to installing a garbage disposal is to set up the mounting assembly. To put the snap ring on, pry it in the indentation at the flange’s neck. You can fasten the assembly when the snap ring is in proper position.

Step 5

Hook up the dispenser to the electrical wiring. Be certain the power is turned off. Check the breaker panel or the fuse box. Do not skip this step.

Step 6

Link the disposal system on the assembly. Turn the mounting collar. This will allow it to engage the mounting bracket. Be certain the collar is fastened all around. If it is, you can secure the collar tight.

Step 7

Now you have to configure the plumbing. Position the drain line so it aligns with the dispenser’s drain port. Slide the fastener from the drain all the way to the dispenser’s connector. Tighten this by hand.

If you are hooking a dishwasher to the dispenser, slide the hose clamp above the hose. Let it slip by a few inches. Try shaking it. If it does not get rattled, fasten the connection of the drain line.

Step 8

Plug in the dispenser. Turn the power back on. Turn the water on. Check it for leaks. If there are none, the installation is finished.

Prior to installing a garbage disposal, be certain it isn’t too big for the sink. You will also have to determine the discharge tube size. If the tube length isn’t right, you can buy extension components. Also, do not tighten the screw too much.
