An easy way to personalize a room is to make a headboard. Although you can buy these, nothing beats having a custom made headboard for your digs.
Required Tools and Materials
Clear gloss aerosol spray paint

220-grit sandpaper

Medium-density fiberboard IMDF)
Slice the MDF to the width appropriate for the bed. For a twin bed, the right size is 42.5 inches wide. The height is up to you. Use the circular saw to cut the MDF. If the bed is for a child, the height should be half the kid’s height.
Step 2
When the board has been cut, smooth the edges of the MDF. Next, prime the MDF. Let the primer dry totally.
Step 3
The last step to make a headboard is to paint it. Paint it any color you like. Allow it to dry. After painting is done, spray the headboard. This will produce a clear finish.
Step 4
Position the headboard on the head of the bed. Set the bed against it.
Choosing the Right Material
There are many types of wood available. If you are on a budget, you can use old doors or simple plywood. If you want to create plywood backing, put foam over it. This is ideal for an upholstered headboard. If you prefer the rustic appearance, you can use fences.
Assessing the Height
As stated earlier, thiis is a matter of personal preference. Many headboards however, end around the person’s neck area. But some prefer the headboard higher.
Tips and Warnings
Wear a face mask when applying paint. Open the windows or electric fans; never paint if ventilation is poor. Use the circular saw and other power tools carefully. Wear eye protection goggles so debris do not get into them. You can also wear gloves to protect your hands.
If you are using an antique piece of shutter or fence, ensure it gets a thorough sanding. Make sure that it is wiped thoroughly. If the material is old, apply a sealer. This will ensure the material does not splinter or chip.
Do not use paint if it is lead-based. If you are creating an upholstered headboard, it is necessary to put the batting or foam on the plywood. The fastest way to do this is with a staple gun.
The most important thing to remember when you make a headboard is to measure the width properly. As long as the dimensions are correct, the rest of the construction process will be easy.
