How to Refinish Cabinets

How to Refinish Cabinets

Refinishing cabinets is a cheap but effective way to freshen up tired old cabinets. Unlike other DIY jobs, this one takes little effort.

Required Tools and Materials

Masking tape
Stain rags
Stain
Polyurethane, lacquer or acrylic clear coat
Screwdriver or drill
Sandpaper (different grits)
Tarp

Step 1

Remove the drawers and doors from the cabinets. Take the hardware off too.

Step 2

Get the sandpaper. Sand the clear coat from the cabinet. Sand the drawer fronts and doors too. Start with the low grit. Keep increasing the grit until the desired texture and smoothness is attained. You can use up to 150 grit. The detail sander will be handy for crannies and nooks.

Step 3

Before refinishing cabinets, mask the portions that have to be stained. Apply the stain uniformly in the drawer front and the cabinet. Set the doors on a tarp. Stain one side.

After it dries, stain the other side. Leave the stain on for 5 minutes. Afterwards, wipe it with a lint free rag. This will remove any stains.

Step 4

Repeat the staining procedure until you get the desired look.

Step 5

After the surface has dried, sand it with a 220 grit sandpaper. Put one of the clear coat types you like. Let it dry.

Refinishing the Cabinet Handles

Required Tools and Materials

Varnish
Refinishing stain
Paint brush
Liquid deglosser
2 cloths
Sandpaper
Sponge
Wood cleaner

Step 1

Remove the cabinet handles. Wet the sponge in the wood cleaner. Clean the handles with the sponge. Let it dry for 60 minutes.

Step 2

Use the sandpaper to sand the handles. This ought to remove any protrusions. Dust the handles with the rag or cloth. Do not stain the handle until you have dusted the handles.

Step 3

Apply liquid deglosser on the surface to soften it.

Step 4

Wipe the surface using the stain. After staining, get another clean cloth. Use it to remove any extra stain. Let the handles dry for 24 hours.

Step 5

Put a coat varnish on the handles. Let it sit for 3 hours before applying a second varnish coat. The paint brush should be used here. Allow the cabinet handles to dry. Connect the handles to the cabinet.

When you are refinishing cabinets, try to keep the workplace tidy. You will need to remove several components, so make sure you do not lose them. You should also work on only one cabinet at a time. Also keep in mind that some stain products may have specific drying times. Check the package.
