Materials Needed
To fix the holes in your walls, you must bring a number of essential materials such as utility knife, grit sandpaper and soft-bristle brush. In addition, you also need a drywall, screws as well as sheetrock tape. Aside from these things, you also need to bring in paint, putty knife and drywall compound. Once you have these materials ready, you can start fixing the holes in your walls right away.
Steps
Before fixing the wall, you need to establish a firm foundation by removing the remaining paper and debris from the hole. Get a brush and then use it to dust away debris. Likewise, remove loose wall materials. After brushing the hole, use grit sandpaper to smooth out the hole and its surrounding areas. Get the utility knife and then use it to turn the hole into symmetrical square form. All the excess materials on the wall must be removed.
Prepare the drywall for cutting. Cut it in a size that will perfectly fit the symmetrical square made earlier. Be sure that the new piece is a bit smaller than the area to be repaired. Patch this right into the hole using drywall screws. By doing this, you are sure that the patch is secured tightly on the wall. Fix the edges of the repaired area using sheetrock tape. In case you do not have this kind of tape, you can instead use strips of drywall.
Get the drywall compound and then use a small amount of it in order to even out the patched area. Spread the compound over the tape as well as the patch. Additionally, be sure to cover the edges extending all the way out to 6 inches. When the drywall compound dries out completely, use the sandpaper right over the patched area. Brush off dirt and debris. Get the same shade of paint as the rest of the wall and then use it to even out the color of the patched area.
Additional Tips and Other Helpful Information
If you cannot find a stud behind the hole, you can use backing strips. Meanwhile, you can use a fan in order for the drywall compound to dry off faster. For safety reasons, it is advisable to wear a respirator all throughout the process of doing this project.
